At the abandoned farm of Medalheimur, far from the river, a rather shallow test pit showed signs of early occupation, including a possible hearth. The prominent chalk-white line is tephra from an eruption of Mount Hekla in 1104. The red and black are peat ash and charcoal from a hearth fire.
