Work goes on around the clock on a research cruise. Here, the remotely-operated submersible Jason II is swung overboard to begin a night-time dive to photograph and sample the seafloor thousands of feet below the ship. It can take an hour and a half, or longer, for the submersible to reach the bottom, even descending at 30m (100ft) per minute.
