World of Opportunity

The Worldwide Universities Network, formed in 2001, now includes 14 leading research universities in the United States, Britain, Europe, and China. The driving idea: To gather teams of experts with the collective know-how to tackle major global issues in ways that individual institutions can’t.

Electric Moments

When electrical engineer Victor Pasko and a colleague finally witnessed a blue sprite in the night sky above Puerto Rico, “We just started screaming,” he remembers. “It was the most spectacular thing I’ve ever seen.”

Industrial Revolution and Beyond

Last semester, 16 Penn State undergraduates and three faculty members spent two weeks traveling through Iceland and the United Kingdom. They stayed in youth hostels, ate at truckstops, and suffered through days of bone-chilling rain. Their mission: to chart the West’s progress from 18th-century rural economy to the post-industrial economy of the 21st century, and understand the role that energy resources have played in that transformation.

Times of Sorrow & Hope

Between 1935 and 1943, a group of American photographers — some famous, others to become famous, and some who remain largely unknown — fanned out across the country to document the effects of Depression and war on the American people. A new selection of images from the resulting archive, published by the Penn State Press, provides an extraordinary record of Pennsylvania at a crossroads.
