Construction workers were beginning to tear down the remains of the south tower — the only section of the building still standing — when Mashel visited New York. "Every time I'd hear debris fall, I'd cringe," she recalls. Smoke rose from the smoldering rubble, clouding the sky and making the air difficult to breathe. "It was surreal. I just couldn't comprehend what I was seeing."
