"In Memory"
Union Square at 14th and Broadway marks the beginning of downtown. It used to be an ideal spot to gaze at the Towers. After September 11, the area was transformed into a memorial to the victims, with red, white, and blue candles, colorful bouquets, and pictures drawn by children covering more than half of the park. "People did what they could to show they cared," Mashel says. "Strangers hugged and brought flowers. The feeling of unity was overwhelming."
