Within the financial district, this store collected several inches of ash on its awning. Shops were deserted, and New York seemed like a ghost town, Mashel says. "When I'd stay in the city, I could wake up at 4 a.m. and hear people talking outside, a siren going off, music next door. Now I could close my eyes and just hear soft sobs and whispers."
