Flowers Out of Glass

Dear R/PS: Just a short message to compliment Research/Penn State in general, and to express appreciation for the good review of glass surface chemistry in "Flowers Out of Glass" in the September 1999 issue. It is interesting to note that glass and porcelain utility pole insulators, exposed to "the elements" as they are, are subject to some of the same forms of deterioration suffered by the Blaschka flowers. Amazingly, some insulators retain their brilliancy for decades, while others become dull after only a few years of use depending upon the type of glass and/or porcelain glaze used. Your discussion of surface chemistry contained information in an easy-to-understand form that would have been difficult to glean from texts. Nice job!

Hormone Myths

Dear R/PS: Sorry to say that you may have to interview more women who take Depo-Provera. I had always been considered thin. I am 5’3" and never, except for at the age of 21 when I was pregnant and weighed 125 pounds, have I weighed more than 117. Until my doctor prescribed Depo-Provera. In two months I swelled to 140. I have been on Depo for about one year, and no matter how little I eat I cannot go under 130. I have also lost all of my muscle tone. There may be women who believe that Depo has no effect on them. But believe me, weight gain and muscle loss are only some of the effects Depo has had on me. If you ever want to do a study, let me be one of the women you contact. I’ll be happy to fill you in on the rest.
